Who is Mahua Moitra?

Indian politician Mahua Moitra (born on 12 October 1974) is a Member of Parliament in the 17th Lok Sabha from West Bengal (Krishnanagar). After being elected, she contested for the All India Trinamool Congress (AITC) party and won the 2019 Indian General Election as the candidate.

Moitra served as a West Bengal Member of the Legislative Assembly for Karimpur from 2016 to 2019.

Childhood and education: 

Mahua Moitra was born on 12 October 1974 to Dwipendra Lal Moitra and Manju Moitra in Labak, Cachar District, Assam.

Moitra completed her schooling in Kolkata and later graduated from Mount Holyoke College in South Hadley, Massachusetts, USA with a degree in Economics and Mathematics. 

Career:

2009:

Moitra  joined politics in 2009 after quitting her job as an investment banker in JP Morgan Company in New York and working in the company’s branch in London where she served as Vice President.

In 2009, she resigned from her post in London and took a flight to India to enter Indian politics for the first time. 

Mahua Moitra entered politics through the Congress Party in 2009 and joined the Trinamool Congress Party. She contested and won West Bengal Assembly Elections on behalf of Trinamool Congress Party from Karimpur Constituency and was elected as an MLA for the first time.

Subsequently, she joined the Indian Youth Congress, the youth wing of the Indian National Congress, and became one of Rahul Gandhi’s trusted confidants in the “Am Admi Ka Sipahi” scheme.

“The hand of the Congress is the hand of the common man” and ‘Congress soldier of the people’ among the youth of Bengal have been popularized by Moitra’s slogan. 

2010:

Later in 2010 due to internal conflict, she joined the All India Trinamool Congress.

2016:

Moitra served as a member of the West Bengal Legislative Assembly representing Karimpur from 2016 to 2019, and has served as the General Secretary and National Spokesperson of AITC for the past few years.

2019:

She won the 2019 parliamentary elections as an MP from the Krishnanagar Lok Sabha seat in the Bengal parliamentary elections and was elected as a member of the Lok Sabha by winning against BJP candidate Kalyan Chaubey with a majority of 63,218 votes.

Although Mahua Moitra won as MP in 2019, she later participated in the Lok Sabha sessions and broke through with her first speech against the dictatorial tendencies of the NDA and gained national recognition.

2022:

Mahua Moitra served as the state in-charge of the Trinamool Congress (TMC) in the 2022 Goa Assembly elections.

She is also a member of the Parliamentary Standing Committee on IT Sector headed by MP Shashi Tharoor.

Controversies and scandals:

The channel’s chief Sudhir Chaudhary filed a defamation suit against Mahua Moitra for falsely accusing the Zee News channel during her speech in the Lok Sabha on June 25, 2019, calling the owner of the organization a thief, and that her speech was damaging to the reputation of the channel.
