Known for her breakthrough with the award-winning movie, Gifted in 2017, actress Mckenna Grace has achieved a lot of fame and appreciation in life. She was born in the United States on June 25, 2006. She was born in Grapevine, Texas, moved to Los Angeles, California, as a young child, and started her professional acting career at age five. Early roles included Faith Newman in the soap opera The Young and the Restless (2013–2015) and Jasmine Bernstein in the Disney XD sitcom Crash & Bernstein (2012–2014). She had a number of small roles before making her breakthrough as a young prodigy in Gifted (2017), for which she was nominated for the Critics’ Choice Movie Award for Best Young Performer.

Grace starred in the 2019 motion pictures Captain Marvel, Troop Zero, and I, Tonya (2017). After several horror-themed films, such as The Bad Seed (2018), The Haunting of Hill House (2018), and Annabelle Comes Home (2019), some journalists referred to her as the scream queen. Grace became the first child actress to be qualified for an Emmy in guest acting. When she was nominated for a Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Guest Actress in a Drama Series for her role as an abused teenager in The Handmaid’s Tale (2021–2022). 

She received very positive reviews for her work and was nominated for a Critics’ Choice Super Award for her brilliant role in the supernatural comedy Ghostbusters: Afterlife (2021). Grace played Jan Broberg in A Friend of the Family show and wrote, produced, and starred in The Bad Seed Returns in 2022.

Early Life

Grace was born in the United States, in Grapevine, Texas. She is the only child of her parents who work as orthopedic surgeon Ross Burge, her father and medical sales representative her mother, Crystal Grace. She grew up in Dallas. She received cheerleading, gymnastics, tap, ballet, and beauty pageant training at a very young age. She was crowned as the “Tiny Miss Texas” in several events.

Grace was homeschooled and was tutored on sets. She has never attended a real school. Grace said that, in 2017 she went to a once-weekly creative writing workshop with other homeschooled students. In 2021, she enrolled in a media aesthetics course at her college, where she was required to write about The Handmaid’s Tale on a regular basis without mentioning her own work on the show.

When Grace was four years old, her great-grandmother gave her a collection of Shirley Temple DVD films, which sparked her interest in acting. Grace’s acting instructor, Morgan Fairchild’s sister, suggested that she start singing with an agent. She was five years old when she landed her first role in a commercial. Later, her agent suggested that she go to Los Angeles, California, to see if she could get parts in TV series and movies. Her father decided to relocate to Ventura after her successful acting in Crash & Bernstein and Goodbye World.


Grace made her acting debut as Jasmine Bernstein in Disney XD’s Crash & Bernstein. She returned to the show in the second season and continued to act until 2014. She showed up as a guest on The Goodwin Games, a sitcom on Fox, during this time. She debuted in the comedy-drama Goodbye World in 2013, which left critics disappointed. She played Faith Newman’s role in The Young and the Restless from 2013-2015. Grace also acted in The Vampire Diaries as a young Caroline Forbes in 2015. 

In an article titled “It’s one thing to look like the younger version of a character, but Grace even cried like Caroline,” TV Line listed her appearance as one of the greatest television flashback castings. Grace appeared in three well-planned movies in 2016: Independence Day, Mr. Church, and The Angry Birds Movie.

Fun Fact: Mckenna Grace was casted as the young Carol Danvers in the movie “Captain Marvel.”

Grace starred in the 2018 horror film “The Bad Seed”, which was a remake of the 1956 film of the same name, which was based on William March’s 1954 novel. Emma Grossman, the character she played, is a killer who kills anyone who crosses her path. She was thrilled to have a chance to portray a horror villain, which she always wanted to do. In order to prepare for the part, Grace used to watch the 1956 movie and focused on mimicking Rhoda Penmark (the Emma character in that movie) facial expressions. She also took advice from Patty McCormack, who portrayed Rhoda in the movie which led her to perform really well in the movie.

Music Career

After signing a record deal with Photo Finish Records in 2020, the music video and debut single “Haunted House” were released in November 2021. She and Lily Kincade co-wrote the song, and Nathaniel Motte worked as the producer. “One could take this as a breakup song, but it could also be about a friend or a family member or any kind of relationship that’s ended,” She added that the song was written during a difficult time in her life during the COVID-19 pandemic.

She released her second and third singles in 2022, “You Ruined Nirvana” and “Do All My Friends Hate Me?”. Inspired by her struggles with scoliosis, she released “Self Dysmorphia” on November 18, 2022. “It’s a little bit weird to put these deeply personal thoughts and struggles out into the world for the public, “But, hopefully, people going through similar experiences will feel less alone.”

Personal Life

Grace’s mother said that their personal life is “extremely normal,” but Grace prefers to keep her life really private so she “can have a childhood and live herself out as a teenager.” Grace claims that by spending time with her family and dog, she keeps herself apart from her acting life. She uses Twitter, TikTok, and Instagram as social media platforms which are approved and maintained by her mother.

Grace was diagnosed with scoliosis when she was 12. She had to wear a back brace to correct her spine while filming Ghostbusters Afterlife, but she found it very uncomfortable and ended up not wearing it whenever she didn’t find it important. She badly needed surgery to keep her spinal curvature from affecting her internal organs after it exceeded 45 degrees. After having a Spinal surgery in October 2022, her curvature was reduced to six degrees.
