Gayathrie Shankar was born in Thiruvananthapuram (Trivandrum), Kerala on May 2nd, 1993. She is half Tamil, half Malayali. However, she grew up chiefly in the cosmopolitan town of Bengaluru (Bangalore), Karnataka. 

Gayathrie Shankar’s family has a glorious history of association with the Indian Defence Forces. Her father worked in the Indian Air Force and her grandfather was in the Indian Army. Gayathrie Shankar’s mother worked as a banker and she had a multicultural upbringing because of her family’s army background.

As a result of her background and interest in languages, Gayathrie Shankar is a polyglot. She speaks Tamil, English, Malayalam, Telugu, Kannada, Hindi, and Marathi.

How did Gayathrie Shankar start her movie career?

Gayathrie Shankar’s movie career started very early. She was offered her first role before turning 18. She was cast in director N. Krishna’s movie Yean Ippadi Mayakkinai. One of the people associated with the movie spotted her with her friends at a bowling alley. She was screen tested and signed up for the lead role soon after that. Unfortunately, the movie was never released because of legal issues. 

Gayathri Shankar went back to school after that and enrolled in a college afterward. However, she continued getting numerous offers throughout her college life. She signed up for 18 Vayasu, Ponmaalai Pozhuthu, and Naduvula Konjam Pakkatha Kaanom while she was in college. After getting her psychology degree, Gayathrie Shankar started a full time acting career.

Gayathrie Shankar: Movie Career 

After the setback of an unreleased movie, Gayathrie Shankar eventually made her acting debut with the 2012 movie “18 Vayasu”. That movie wasn’t a hit and Gayathrie Shankar didn’t really become a star because of it. She hit stardom with the movie Madhuul Kadu Pakhta Kanom alongside Vijay Sethupathi. That movie boosted her career exponentially and she went on to appear in numerous movies like Ponmalai Padu, Rummy (with Inigo Prabhakaran), Oru Nallanal Bhattu Sholeren, Puriyatha Pujam, and Super Deluxe (starring Vijay Sethupathi, Samantha Akkineni, Bahad Basil, Ramya Krishnan, Myshkin). 

Gayathrie Shankar made her Malayalam debut with the 2022 movie Nna Thaan Case Kodu.

Directorial debut

Gayathrie Shankar made her directorial debut with the short film “Shit Happens”. It was a part of the eighth India Film Project. She said that she started the project “on an impulse”. Even though she enjoyed the process of directing the movie, she doesn’t have any plans of doing many directorial ventures in the future. 

Gayathrie Shankar: Life outside the movies

Animal welfare

Aside from being a movie star, Gayathrie Shankar is also known for her compassionate nature and love of animals. Gayathrie Shankar has volunteered for CUPA Bangalore for a long time. CUPA is one of the oldest animal shelters in the city. She also volunteered at the Besant Memorial Animal Dispensary (BMAD), Chennai, and helped rescue a lot of animals. She is a trained snake catcher. She learned under the tutelage of renowned catcher Gowri Shankar through a Forest Department workshop.


Gayathrie Shankar loves sports but she started participating quite late in her life. She started her love affair with Ultimate Frisbee after a friend introduced her to the sport in Chennai. It was a life changing experience for her and she has since vouched for girls to pick up sports early in their life. Gayathrie Shankar has also expressed a desire to appear in a sports themed movie at some point in her career.

Gayathrie Shankar is also a big fan of adventure sports and she landed a spot on Atcham Thavir, an adventure based reality show on Vijay TV.
